While the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus may have been the talk of the town when Apple revealed the phones on Tuesday, the other fruit-branded gadget that gobbled up everyone’s attention was the Apple Watch.
Coming in standard, sports and luxury gold varieties, the Apple Watch seemingly has something for everyone no matter their design preference, but what’s in it for those who are looking for a smartwatch packed with features?
As it turns out, not a lot. The device may pack a design punch – both in terms of style and in the practicality of its navigational Digital Crown dial – but thus far it fails to have a real purpose outside of being a glorified pedometer. Apple would need to find a killer app fast then, if their Apple Watch is to launch into a smartwatch market already dominated by tech rival Samsung who now have two smartwatches and a fitness device on the market. And as luck would have it Apple may have just found one.
The so called back of the box feature that could potentially put the Apple Watch a head (or should that be ‘a wrist’?) above its rivals is its anti-theft locking feature. According to a report from Cult of Mac, just taking the device off of your wrist locks it, therefore making it a good-looking yet ultimately unusable dud for the thieves that decided to steal it.
How this ingenious mechanism works is that the first you you put the Apple Watch on, you’re asked to enter a code. Then, when you take it off again should you want to unlock the device you’d have to enter the code once more, meaning that if the thieves don’t know the code it’ll be impossible for them to use it.
Of course, there are pressing concerns about thieves being able to jam the sensors on the back of the watch (this is just a theory of course – it might not even be possible to do so) and what would happen if something happened to your arm, such as having to wear a cast, but Apple will likely answer these in good time.
Concerns to the side, this is an incredibly useful feature. Apple have recently come under fire for not protecting their users enough as an iCloud leak saw hundreds of nude photos of celebrities posted on the web and while they investigated and said they weren’t to blame, plenty of people were still wary.
Furthermore, the Apple Watch also allows users to make purchases via Apple Pay and iTunes and the device itself also costs a minimum of $350 so anything that makes it less desirable to thieves is ultimately a bonus.
