If Apple is great at making unintentionally bendy phones and Samsung is fantastic at packing the fastest processors into their handsets, then HTC’s best asset is its cameras. Their last flagship, the HTC One (M8), was known for this as it snapped photos with an impressive UltraPixel camera.
It’s not just the rear camera that’s been a hit either. The selfie conscious audience that many new phones are marketed towards were also catered to with HTC’s last effort as the HTC One (M8) even stuck a 5MP camera on the front to make sure that every ridiculous Snapchat photo and posed Instagram effort came out looking pristine as ever.
It makes sense that trend is set to continue then, having been one of HTC’s key strengths in the past. So as the clock ticks down to their much talked about October 8th event we could see a new more camera-focused phone, called the HTC One (M8) Eye, taking the smartphone market by storm.
The rumour, which comes from Android blog Phandroid, claims that although HTC’s cameras are better than most other offerings in the market (as demonstrated by tests in low lighting) the UltraPixel efforts of the HTC One (M8) weren’t a selling point. This is in part due the cameras showing a dip in resolution that didn’t sit well with mobile camera aficionados.
Alas, the HTC One (M8) Eye is upping the ante with reports suggesting that the phone will have a 13MP Duo camera system. What this means is that one 13MP camera will be supported by another 13MP sensor right above it. This sensor, if the ordinary One (M8) is anything to go by, will be responsible for depth of field, 3D effects and better use of filters to make your photos look less ‘amateur photographer’ and more ‘certified professional’.
Meanwhile, the report is lent some credit by an Android developer who commented on Twitter that the phone would be released next month. According to the dev, the HTC One (M8) Eye will launch with Android 4.4.4 (the latest Android operating system) and Sense 6.0 which is exactly what we’d expect.
Questions still remain though, about which markets the phone will launch in first. HTC’s October event is being hosted on US soil by HTC’s American arm but that could just mean they’re catering to American press.
So while the boat’s still out on that one, we are also expecting HTC to announce a GoPro rival at the event (again in line with their camera know how) as the company hopes to turn their profits around. We’ll have more for you on that once it takes place next week.
