While their name might be synonymous with their popular PlayStation brand it’s important to remember that Japanese electronics maker Sony is an emerging force in the smartphone market. The Xperia Z, Z1 and Z2 all have uncomfortably similar names but the phones, which were released over the course of two years, all proved to be decent flagships for the company. So like any business that knows it has a good thing, it’s doing more of the same, now taking to Europe’s biggest tech event, IFA 2014, to announced the Sony Xperia Z4.
Already looked at, poked and messed about with by the world’s media, many are saying that the Xperia Z3 is ‘more of the same’. As in, it’s not a revolutionary product overhaul but it’s certainly a new and improved version. That’s shown off first and foremost in the Xperia Z3’s design.
Slimmed down to 7.3mm, the Z3 loses 0.9mm from its predecessor with the bezels made smaller so that the phone itself isn’t quite as wide, tall or as uncomfortable to hold. It still has the same 5.2-inch display that the Xperia Z2 had though, but unfortunately it’s just a full HD affair rather than the souped up QHD quality that so many new Android phones are set to come with.
That should matter little once you’ve seen what’s under the hood. After a year of 2GB RAM (which we’ve seen form the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One (M8) amongst others) it’s nice to see that the Sony Xperia Z3 comes with 3GB and a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor which is a whopping great deal of mobile horsepower and it ensures that your phone won’t clap out/crash/generally become a clunky hot mess if you have too many apps loaded at one time.
Whilst inarguably powerful though, it’s the Xperia Z3’s collections of other features that really do it justice. The phone has a Adreno 330 GPU which is great for gaming but on top of that, the phone can also be used as a Remote Play controller for the Sony PS4. If you’re out of the loop as to what Remote Play is, it lets you stream a game to your PS4 (when your TV is in use) meaning that your friends can watch whatever they like on TV while you carry on playing on your phone. Result.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Sony Xperia Z3 is water and dust resistant, features microSD support of up to 128GB and it has a 20.7MP camera that will let you shoot 4K video. All incredibly fantastic features for Sony’s next flagship.
There’s no word on price yet though, but Sony say the phone will be out in Autumn 2014.
