The zombie genre is one that just does not seem to die (quite literally). But that’s okay, because zombies are the most fun things in the world to dismember (at least fictional things. Dismembering anything in real life doesn’t sound fun at all). One of the most fun zombie games to roll around in awhile was the Left 4 Dead series. The interesting thing about the prequel is that it isn’t titled Left 4 Dead. Instead, at least as far as anyone knows, the game is going to be titled “No Mercy.” This indicates a darker tone than the one presented by the previous games. Here we’ll cover what we should expect from this prequel.

Solving the Prequel Dilemma

Storywise the game will focus on the origin of the zombie virus. The problem with doing a prequel game, and most prequels in general, is that the gamer knows the outcome beforehand. Valve will have to be sure to have top notch writing to pave away this little problem. It would be interesting to see the game take a drastically different direction from the main games as a chance to give the gamer a sense that it is a totally different story. There are enough post-apocalyptic games out there. We’re in dire need of a mid-apocalyptic game.

Can’t tell if bank robbers or politicians…probably both.

…Makes the Dream Work

It is also worth noting that Valve is teaming up with Overkill, the studio that brought us Payday: The Heist. Perhaps they are bringing this team on to help expand upon the teamwork system, as Payday integrated teamwork rather well into its gameplay. This could be a very cool indication of where gameplay could go, but as previously stated it will hopefully not be a by the numbers retread of the Left 4 Dead gameplay.

Looking Onwards

More left for dead sounds great for everybody. It will be very interesting to see what direction the story and gameplay takes. Until then fans will just have to stay in practice with the zombie games that they have. Stay tuned to Pulse Modz for the latest on this game.
